Our program was started by the Jackson Chamber in 1979 because they wanted to be on the cutting edge of developing young leaders for the future. Being intentional about leadership development would put Jackson on the fast track to informed, connected and passionate leaders who could step into active community roles.

Harbert Alexander and Larry Welch visited several other communities that had leadership programs. None of them were exactly what The Jackson Chamber had in mind so they combined the best of all of the ones they visited and created “Leadership Jackson” specifically for our community.

A committee compiled key elements of the community that became the curriculum for the program. The opening retreat was added to the curriculum in later years. In 1995 the C.O.P.E was a major addition which had the biggest impact in the development of class dynamics. The C.O.P.E. program exposes people to team building, problem solving, and communication skills.

The committee had two goals in mind when leadership Jackson was created. One being to begin to build a core leadership, training young leaders to get involved and secondly, to identify people and fast track them into leadership. With Leadership Jackson we can claim tremendous success with the development and implementation of this program.
